Story Workshops

An Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have for making sense of the world.  And, like many powerful tools, storytelling can also be dangerous.  In the midst of struggle, it's easy to tell ourselves stories that aren't true.  Our deepest source of wisdom lives inside our stories.
Dr. Brené Brown, The Wisdom of Story
Story Workshop is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program for women.  A Story Workshop has two, very interdependent components:

  • Substance treatment, counseling and education; and
  • Story work (assists in trauma recovery).
Substance Treatment, Counseling and Education

Masters level therapits provide substance treatment, counseling and education.  Participants can expect...

  • Complete assessments and evaluations
  • Education on
    • Addiction
    • Health and wellness
    • Communication skills
    • Managing stress, including cravings and triggers
    • Relapse prevention techniques
  • Family group therapy and education
  • Participation in small therapeutic groups
  • Individual counseling
Story Work

Story Work includes...

  • Learning how their story is a part of a much larger story.  God's story of healing, redemption and restoration
  • Exploring the core desires of their hearts as women and how those desires reflect the heart of God
  • Naming the harm and blessings that are a part of their story and how their story has shaped their outlook, tendencies and choices
  • Learning shame resilience, including opportunities to speak of their shame in a safe, compassionate environment.

The core curriculum of the story work component of Story Workshop is based on the works of Dr. Dan B. Allender, PhD and The Allender Center.  We join in their belief that true healing and restoration occurs when we courageously step into our stories of pain and harm.
Rose's story...
Coming into Story Workshop, I was bitter and broken with no apparent purpose in life.  I had no faith in God.  I honestly did not believe he even existed.  Story Workshop changed my life.  I learned how to manage my life better through education and counseling.  And...I found my way back to God.  I learned to take my brokenness to Him through knowing, writing and sharing my story with trusted others.  I quickly learned we all have brokenness in one form or another.  Lastly, Story Workshop helped me to find my purpose as I am now actively engaged in working with other women in the program.  I now live the words, "Let go and Let God" and always "Guard your Heart"!
